Rendering Forest Scenes in Real-Time
نویسندگان
چکیده
Forests are crucial for scene realism in applications such as flight simulators. This paper proposes a new representation allowing for the real-time rendering of realistic forests covering an arbitrary terrain. It lets us produce dense forests corresponding to continuous non-repetitive fields made of thousands of trees with full parallax. Our representation draws on volumetric textures and aperiodic tiling: the forest consists of a set of edgecompatible prisms containing forest samples which are aperiodically mapped onto the ground. The representation allows for quality rendering, thanks to appropriate 3D non-linear filtering. It relies on LODs and on a GPUfriendly structure to achieve real-time performance. Dynamic lighting and shadowing are beyond the scope of this paper. On the other hand, we require no advanced graphics feature except 3D textures and decent fill and vertex transform rates. However we can take advantage of vertex shaders so that the slicing of the volumetric texture is entirely done on the GPU.

Extreme Model Simplification for Forest Rendering
Models of large forest scenes are of a geometric complexity that surpasses even the capabilities of current high end graphics hardware. We propose an extreme simplification method which allows us to render such scenes in realtime. Our work is an extension of the image based-simplification method of Billboard Clouds. We automatically generate tree model representations of 15-50 textured polygons...
متن کاملReal-Time Realistic Rendering of Nature Scenes with Dynamic Lighting
Rendering of natural scenes has interested the scientific community for a long time due to its numerous applications. The targeted goal is to create images that are similar to what a viewer can see in real life with his/her eyes. The main obstacle is complexity: nature scenes from real life contain a huge number of small details that are hard to model, take a lot of time to render and require a...
متن کاملVisually pleasing real-time global illumination rendering for fully-dynamic scenes
Global illumination (GI) rendering plays a crucial role in the photo-realistic rendering of virtual scenes. With the rapid development of graphics hardware, GI has become increasingly attractive even for real-time applications nowadays. However, the computation of physically-correct global illumination is time-consuming and cannot achieve real-time, or even interactive performance. Although the...
متن کاملInteractive Forest Walk-through
Interactive rendering of a forest containing a large number of unique trees and other vegetation is a challenging and important problem in computer graphics and visual simulation. While methods for rendering near photo-realistic vegetation scenes have been described in the literature, they require tens of minutes or even hours of computation. In order to support interactive forest walk-throughs...
متن کاملA Real-Time Sound Rendering Algorithm for Complex Scenes
We present a novel output-sensitive algorithm for sound rendering of complex scenes, i.e. scenes that contain a large amount of sound sources. It allows walkthroughs of complex sound environments (such as a football stadium) in real-time and can be used for observer-dependent auralizations of global sound propagation. The algorithm is based on a stochastic sampling strategy similar to point bas...
